This week’s unsung hero is a pair: Chantal Mouffe and Ernesto Laclau.
Together in their book Hegemony in Socialist Strategy, Mouffe and Laclau make a radical take on deliberative democracy. They are a very leftist take on what a deliberative or agonistic democracy can look like as they ask: What does it mean to have socialism in a world where a lot of the meta narratives about socialism and capitalism have been shown to be empty? Their writing is political theory within post-Marxist thought that points out some foundational flaws within Marxist thought.
